Healthcare in New York is in Crisis — But We Can Fix It

The U.S. spends the most on healthcare, and we see the worst returns, ranking dead last in health outcomes.

What sets us apart from other countries is that they have universal healthcare systems, and we have a for-profit, health insurance system — and health insurance is not healthcare.

Right now, millions of New Yorkers are one illness or job loss away from losing their health coverage. Premiums are skyrocketing, hospitals are closing, and medical debt is crushing working families.

Our federal government isn’t coming to save us. In fact, they are making it much worse. Congress’ One Big Beautiful Bill slashes billions from Medicaid and Medicare — putting 1.5 million New Yorkers at risk of losing coverage and threatening to close 70 of hospitals across our state.

We can’t wait for Congress to save us. Albany must act to pass the New York Health Act — right now.

THE PROBLEM

New York’s healthcare system is a patchwork of profit-driven insurance plans that leaves too many behind.

  • 740,000 New Yorkers are trapped in medical debt.

  • 70 rural hospitals on the brink of closure.

  • Premiums and prescription costs are skyrocketing.

  • Millions are uninsured or underinsured

Just how absurd is our current healthcare system? Here’s a quick video:

THE SOLUTION

The New York Health Act (NYHA) is how we fight back. It guarantees healthcare for every New Yorker — medical, dental, vision, hearing, prescription, long-term care, and more — with no copays, no deductibles, and no surprise bills.

The New York Health Act, saves lives, saves money, creates jobs, boosts small businesses, and strengthens unions.

By replacing private insurance with a single, public plan that puts people over profits, the New York Health Act would:

  • Guarantee care for all 20 million New Yorkers

  • Save billions by eliminating waste and administrative costs

  • Protect hospitals and essential services from closure

  • Put money back in working families’ pockets by eliminating deductibles, copays, and covering prescription costs

  • Expand Coverage to include: dental, vision, hearing, long term care, mental health, and more

  • Strengthen unions by removing healthcare as a bargaining chip

The New York Health Act isn’t just a healthcare policy — it’s economic justice, racial justice, and common sense.

THE TIME IS NOW

Washington may have turned its back on New York, but Albany doesn’t have to. The choice is clear: Pass the New York Health Act and protect every New Yorker.

NYPAN proudly supports the New York Health Act as the most effective and fiscally responsible way to guarantee healthcare for all. Together, we can build a system that works for people — not profit.

It’s time for New York to fight back. It’s time to pass the New York Health Act.
