Party Leaders, Candidates, Democratic Clubs, Grassroots Advocacy Groups, and Community Leaders Call For the Protection of New Yorkers’ Health and Safety

Anything less than canceling ballot petitioning is too little, too late

New York -- A coalition of political candidates, grassroots advocacy groups, Democratic clubs, and community leaders throughout New York State amplified their call today to protect the health of all New Yorkers by waiving the 2021 designating petition signature requirements.

The press conference comes a day after 260 signatories submitted a letter to Governor Cuomo, State Legislative leaders and members, State Democratic Party Chair Mr. Jacobs, and State Democratic Party Executive Director Mr. Wang, requesting that they allow any candidate who files a cover sheet with the appropriate Board of Elections (BOE) to be on the election ballot in lieu of coming into close contact with others while collecting thousands of signatures. At the time of the press conference, 285 allies signed on; the organizers are collecting signatures until Friday, January 29 at 5pm.

“Collecting signatures for a successful designating petition creates an unacceptable risk of exposure to COVID-19 for candidates, their staff and volunteers, and political club members through what are essentially hundreds of thousands of mandated, non-socially distanced interactions,” the letter reads.

TAKE ACTION!
