Why march? UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for a Climate Ambition Summit in New York City and the “ticket to entry” for countries will be tangible action to keep fossil fuels in the ground - in the form of policies, and not just empty declarations. And it's on us to force President Biden to take action!

Our demands:

  1. STOP FEDERAL APPROVALS for new fossil fuel projects and REPEAL permits for climate bombs like the Willow project and the Mountain Valley pipeline.

  2. PHASE OUT FOSSIL FUEL DRILLING on our public lands and waters.

  3. DECLARE A CLIMATE EMERGENCY To halt fossil fuel exports and investments abroad, and turbo-charge the build-out of more just, resilient distributed energy (like rooftop and community solar).

  4. PROVIDE A JUST TRANSITION to a renewable energy future that generates millions of jobs while supporting workers’ and community rights, job security, and employment equity.

Here’s where we’re meeting. Look familiar now?!

Why is the march during Rosh Hashanah? The organizers recognize this mobilization is planned for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. There were a number of factors that led them to choose this date. Given the timing of the UN Climate Summit, Yom Kippur on the following weekend, and the need to make the march accessible for families and working people of all backgrounds on a weekend, Sunday the 17th was the date that was chosen. They did not make this decision lightly, and they deeply respect Jewish communities have different relationships with protest and social action during the High Holidays. We honor and affirm that many Jewish communities and organizations will be praying at this time and we celebrate their observance.

Please consider joining the march after service, either along the line of march (Broadway to 52nd, across 52nd to First Avenue, then down to 50th) or at the rally at 50th and First sometime around 4:00pm.

What to wear Keep an eye on the weather forecast, dress appropriately and bring plenty of water. It can be surprisingly hot standing in a parade, even in September. And, of course, wear any NYPAN gear you have - hats, tees, etc.!

What NOT to bring Single-use plastics!

Fun stuff! If you need inspiration, watch this Ted Talk by Al Gore!
